Our Standards & Training Philosophy
Training With Purpose. Partnering With Intention.
A service dog is more than a highly trained dog. The ultimate goal is a partnership in which both the dog and handler are prepared to navigate the world together with confidence, reliability, and mutual understanding.
At Sunrise Service Dogs, our training philosophy is centered on humane, positive, relationship-based training that recognizes the individual needs of every dog and every person.
We believe the strongest partnerships are built through thoughtful preparation, clear expectations, individualized training, and continued support.
Guided by Industry Standards
Our program is informed by the standards and best practices of Assistance Dogs International (ADI), a worldwide coalition of assistance dog organizations working together to promote excellence in assistance dog programs and partnerships.
ADI standards address many important aspects of an assistance dog program, including:
Ethical treatment and humane training of dogs
Appropriate screening and evaluation of applicants and dogs
Suitability and matching of dogs and handlers
Training for reliable assistance and public access
Handler education and preparation
Compliance with applicable legal and operational requirements
Ongoing support and follow-up for established partnerships
Sunrise Service Dogs integrates these principles into the way we design and deliver our programs.
Sunrise Service Dogs is currently an ADI Candidate for Membership.
What This Means for Our Clients
Standards matter because the service dog journey is about much more than teaching a dog to perform a task.
Our approach is designed to help ensure that:
The right dog is matched with the right person.
We consider temperament, abilities, training progress, lifestyle, and individual needs when developing a partnership.
Dogs are trained with their well-being in mind.
We believe effective training should build confidence, understanding, and a strong working relationship without compromising the dog's physical or emotional welfare.
Handlers are prepared—not simply handed a dog.
Learning to work with a service dog is a skill. Our programs emphasize handler education and hands-on training so individuals understand how to communicate with, care for, and work effectively with their service dog.
Training extends beyond the classroom.
Service dogs must be prepared to work in the environments where their handlers live their lives. Our programs incorporate real-world experiences and public access preparation as appropriate to the dog's development and the partnership.
The partnership continues to grow.
A service dog partnership is not simply a finish line. Continued communication, education, and support help teams build confidence and maintain a successful working relationship.
Our Training Philosophy
Our approach is built around several core principles:
The Dog Comes First
A successful service dog must be physically and behaviorally suited for the work. We prioritize the dog's health, welfare, temperament, and ability to enjoy the work.
The Individual Matters
Every person has different needs, goals, routines, and circumstances. Training should be individualized rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
Partnership Is the Goal
We don't train dogs in isolation from their future handlers. We work toward creating a partnership built on communication, trust, consistency, and teamwork.
Skills Must Work in the Real World
A dog may perform beautifully in a training room and still need significant preparation for real-world environments. We progressively build skills in the places and situations where service dogs are expected to work.
Progress Matters More Than Speed
Every dog and handler team develops differently. We focus on meaningful progress and readiness rather than rushing a team through training simply to meet a timeline.
A Commitment to Continuous Improvement
As Sunrise Service Dogs grows, so does our commitment to developing a program that reflects current best practices in assistance dog training and partnership development.
Being an ADI Candidate for Membership represents our commitment to pursuing these standards and continuing to strengthen our program.
Our promise is to approach every dog, every applicant, and every partnership with thoughtfulness, respect, and a commitment to doing the work well.
Because the standard isn't simply a trained dog.
It's a successful partnership..
